How to Choose a Dildo in the Dildo Shopping Guide

Definition of Dildo

Dildo - A sex toy that is designed for vaginal or anal penetration, is usually shaped like a phallus, and does not vibrate on it's own - although many dildos come with small bullet vibes that can be inserted to make the dildo vibrate. A dildo may be made of anything from acrylic, glass, and ceramic to CyberskinTM. They may be textured, smooth or ribbed and shaped like a penis, a wand, a person, an animal; basically anything that can be elongated. Double-ended dildos are toys that may be used on either end. Some are flexible and designed for two people to use at once, while some are rigid and simply for experiencing different sensations at each end. Most harness toys are dildos that have a phallic shape and a flanged or flared base.

We know how overwhelming selecting a dildo can be. Fortunately, if you answer three simple questions, it's easy!

1. Results: What do you want this toy to do for you (or your partner)?

  • Is this your first foray into buying a dildo? Then consider starting out with a small and smooth toy.
  • Are you looking for something to simulate intercourse? Then a traditional dildo is your best bet, especially as many of these are made of realistic feeling materials.
  • Want a dildo with G-Spot stimulation? Try a dildo with a curvature at the end.
  • Something for use with a partner? You want a harness-compatible or double-ended dildo.

2. Materials: What do you want this toy to feel like?

  • Do you want something that feels as much like skin as possible? Then you definitely want something made of CyberskinTM, Futurotic or Soft Touch materials; these materials are pricier than plastic, jelly or rubber, but feel uncannily realistic.
  • Are you looking for something that feels realistic, but is more affordable? Most dildos made of jelly or rubber will warm to your body temperature and feel more lifelike.
  • Do you prefer something rigid that has different shapes and textures to it? Then an acrylic, glass, ceramic dildo is perfect for you. They come textured, smooth or ribbed, plus they can be heated or chilled for unique sensations.
  • Do you want a dildo that is hypoallergenic and can be sterilized? Materials like silicone, glass and ceramic are more expensive, but they're also more body healthy and will last a lifetime.

3. Size: Do you want smaller than average, average or extra-large?

  • Are you just beginning to experiment with toys? Then you'll probably want to start with a smaller dildo.
  • Is a feeling of fullness most gratifying to you? Look for anything that has words describing magnitude in the name, such as "colossal" or "titan." Again, though, be sure to look at the dimensions so that you're not disappointed.
  • Do you want something of an average size that won't be as intimidating to bring into your intimate relationship? You should look at the dimensions of the dildo. If they're not listed in the description, contact customer service and ask; don't just go by a picture. If a toy is uncomfortable or too small to satisfy, then you'll be frustrated and unhappy.

Can I use this dildo in a harness?
Dildos with wider, flared bases are usually designed for harness use, but if you want harness play, you should be sure to purchase a dildo from our Strap On Harnesses and Dildos collection.

Why don't you have any bigger dildos?

We do offer a number of larger dildos. However, we've found that many people underestimate how large a dildo with a diameter of 1-1/2" is. That's actually much larger than the average male penis, so be careful when you start thinking you need even more girth on your dildo!

Should I use lubricant with my dildo?

Yes! You should always use lubricant with any sex toy. We recommend using lubricant for all types of sex play.

What type of lubricant should I use?

That depends on what type of sex toy you have! Look for your answer in Lubricant - How Do I Use It With Sex Toys?

Can I use my dildo for anal play?

For anal use, we recommend using only dildos with flared safety bases, such as those shown in our Anal Dildos departments. Using any other toy poses the risk of getting lost!

Why are silicone dildos so much more expensive?

Silicone has a number of benefits that other materials simply don't, which makes it more expensive. For more details, please read Silicone: High Tech and Highly Pleasurable.

Do realistic dildos actually feel realistic?

To be honest, some people (most people) say yes, but some are disappointed. For more information on realistic materials and products, read Realistics: So Close to the Real Thing.

What's a double-ended dildo for?

Pleasuring yourself, or sharing pleasure with a partner! For more information, please refer to the dildos section of the MyPleasure Guide to Sex Toys.
